What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?

Implant-supported dentures offer a revolutionary alternative for patients who are missing multiple teeth. Unlike traditional dentures that sit on the gums, implant-supported dentures anchor securely to dental implants placed surgically into the jawbone. This gives them stability, comfort, and functionality similar to natural teeth.

All-On-4 Implant Supported Dentures

All-on-4 is a descriptive name for dentures supported by four implants in the upper or lower jaw. In this procedure, four implants are placed in the sturdiest areas of bone and dentures are affixed to the implants.

Implant-supported dentures can either be removable for cleaning at home or permanently attached.

Finally, denture wearers can experience a new freedom. They can eat what they want, even sticky foods. And no longer will their dentures loosen or come out.

Why Only Four Implants?

Typically, four implants are enough to anchor dentures. Additionally, people who have worn dentures for many years have often lost a significant amount of bone in either jaw. By only placing four implants for either an upper or lower denture, the strongest areas of bone can be utilized. (Please note: Some patients may require more than four implants to stabilize their dentures.)

"Dr. Michaelsen was awesome. He took out my tooth put in the implant along with a temporary that looks great!. He walked me through pretty much everything he was doing kept asking if I was ok. The assistant was great to Definitely kept me entertained and took my situation very seriously and even helped me relax by letting me know she has had the same thing done and that we can compare when mine is officially done. Julie helped me in financing everything and was absolutely great at helping me get the payments low enough to afford. It was definitely the best experience I have ever had. I even woke up and I hardly feel a thing it's more sore where they stuck the needles to numb me than anything."

What is an Implant-Supported Bridge?

A fixed dental prosthetic that replaces multiple missing teeth is an implant-supported bridge. It is similar to implant-supported dentures in that it depends on dental implants for stability and support. This option is perfect for patients missing multiple adjacent teeth and wanting a permanent solution to restore their smile.

All-on-4 Dental Implants

The All-on-4 system provides a full-arch fixed restoration using only four strategically placed dental implants. This innovative technique maximizes support for the bone and reduces the need for bone-grafting procedures. It offers a quicker and more efficient way to replace missing teeth.

All-on-6 Dental Implants

All-on-6 implants are similar to All-on-4 dental implants in that they provide a fixed, full-arch restoration using six implants per arch. This method provides more stability and support for patients who have greater bone density.

All-on-X Dental Implants

All-on X dental implants are a flexible option that can accommodate varying implant numbers depending on the individual's needs. This custom-made approach provides optimal stability and aesthetics while also addressing each patient’s individual needs.

Implant-Supported Dentures: Benefits and Advantages

  • Improved Stability: Implant-supported dentures offer superior functionality and stability compared to traditional dentures.

  • Better Comfort: Implant-supported dentures provide greater comfort because they don't rest on the gums.

  • Preserving Jawbone: The dental implants stimulate the jawbone to prevent bone loss.

  • Natural Appearance: Implant-supported dentures feel and look like natural teeth. They restore your confidence and smile.

What is the Procedure For Implant-Supported Dentures?

This multi-step procedure requires precision and close collaboration between Dr. Michaelsen and you. This is a step-by-step guide to each stage.

  • Consultation and Evaluation at the Initial Stage:

The first step in your journey to implant-supported dentures is a consultation with Dr. Michaelsen. During this appointment, you will have the chance to discuss dental concerns, treatment objectives, and your medical history. Dr. Michaelsen performs a thorough examination of your dental health. This includes assessments of your gums, teeth, and jawbone.

  • Treatment Planning:

Dr. Michaelsen creates a customized treatment plan based on your findings and goals. This plan will detail the number of implants required, the best placement locations, and the type of dentures that will suit your smile and lifestyle. Dr. Michaelsen takes the time to answer any questions you may have and will explain the proposed treatment plan in detail.

  • Dental Implant Placement:

The next step is to place dental implants surgically into the jawbone. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia and may include sedation to ensure that you are comfortable throughout. Dr. Michaelsen places the implants precisely in your jawbone for maximum stability and support of your dentures. Additional procedures, such as sinus augmentation or bone grafting, may be required to ensure success and optimize implant placement.

  • Healing and Osseointegration:

A healing period after the implants is required to allow osseointegration, the process whereby the implants fuse with surrounding bone tissue. During this period, your jawbone grows and integrates with the implants to create a durable and strong foundation for your dentures. The healing time may be affected by factors like your health or the quality of the bone tissue. Dr. Michaelsen provides detailed instructions for post-operative healing to minimize discomfort and promote proper healing.

  • Dentures: Fabrication and Attachment:

The final step is to fabricate and attach your implant-supported dentures. Dr. Michaelsen and our dental lab will work together to design custom dentures that complement your smile and fit comfortably. The dentures are attached to the implants with special connectors or abutments, providing a lifelike restoration that looks and feels like natural teeth.

  • Follow-Up Care and Maintenance:

After your implant-supported prosthetic is in place, regular follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor your performance and oral health. Dr. Michaelsen can advise you on how to maintain your dentures and ensure their longevity. If properly maintained, your new smile will provide you with years of comfort, confidence, and functionality.

Following this comprehensive treatment, we can restore your confidence and enhance your quality of life. We invite you to book a consultation with Dr. Michaelsen to discuss your options.

Common Questions About Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are a great way to replace missing teeth. However, it is natural that you have some questions about the process, maintenance, and benefits. These frequently asked questions are answered in detail to help you understand implant-supported dental prostheses:

  • Are implant-supported dentures removable?

Yes, dentures supported by implants can be removed for cleaning or maintenance. Implant-supported dentures, however, are not like traditional removable dentures, which rely on adhesives or suction to keep them in place. Instead, they are surgically anchored to a dental implant placed into the jawbone. They do not move or slip when speaking or chewing. This gives them greater stability and confidence.

  • Does implant placement hurt?

The implant placement procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia for your comfort. Dr. Michaelsen can also provide sedation to help you relax. You may feel some mild discomfort or swelling after the surgery. However, you can manage any pain with over-the-counter pain medication. Dr. Michaelsen provides detailed instructions for post-operative care to minimize discomfort and promote healing.

  • How should I take care of my implant-supported dentures?

Proper care and maintenance are essential for the longevity and success of your implant-supported prosthetics. Brush your dentures daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive cleaner to remove plaque and food particles. It's also important to use interdental floss or brushes designed specifically for implants to clean the gum tissue and around implants. It is also important to have regular dental cleanings and checkups. This will help you monitor your oral health, and ensure the integrity of dentures and implants.

  • How long will my implant-supported dentures stay in place?

Implant-supported dentures are durable and can last many years. They may even last a lifetime with proper maintenance. Dental implants are a durable and stable foundation for dentures. They can withstand the force of chewing or speaking. To ensure that your implant-supported prosthetics last as long as possible, you must attend regular dental visits and follow Dr. Michaelsen’s oral hygiene and maintenance recommendations.

  • Am I a candidate for implant-supported dentures?

Implant-supported dentures are a good option for most people who have multiple missing teeth or need to replace a full arch of teeth. Candidacy can be affected by factors like overall health, oral hygiene, and bone density. Dr. Michaelsen will assess your oral health during your first consultation and then discuss your treatment options with you, to determine whether implant-supported dentures are the best option for you.

  • Is implant-supported dentures’ cost higher than traditional dentures?

Although the initial cost may be higher for implant-supported dentures than traditional removable dentures they provide significant benefits over time in terms of comfortability and functionality. Implant-supported dentures may also help to prevent bone loss and reduce future dental treatment, saving you money over time. Dr. Michaelsen can provide a detailed breakdown of the costs and financing options at your consultation to help you make an informed choice about your dental treatment.

We hope that by answering these questions you will feel more confident about making decisions regarding your oral health. Please contact us if you have further questions or would like to schedule a consultation with Dr. Michaelsen. We are here to help you get the smile of your dreams!
