What is a Bone Graft?

Bone grafts are a surgical procedure to replace damaged or missing bone in the jaw. This procedure may be necessary if the jaw has insufficient bone mass to support dental implants and other dental restorations. Bone grafts are a great way to regenerate lost bones and create a strong foundation for a healthy smile.

Consultation:

A comprehensive consultation with Dr. Michaelsen is required. He will evaluate your oral health and examine your jawbone structure in detail. X-rays and 3D scans may be taken to determine the exact bone density. You will be asked to discuss your medical history, any medications you may be taking, and your dental needs. Dr. Michaelsen explains the procedure of bone grafting in detail. He will answer all questions and explain the risks and benefits. A personalized treatment plan is created based on your assessment. It will address your specific situation and dental goals.

Preparation:

Preparation is essential before the procedure to ensure comfort and success. Local anesthesia is administered to numb the site where the grafts will be placed. Sedation may be an option if the procedure is complex or you are anxious about dental work. Clean and prepare the area where you will place your graft. Any damaged tissue or remnants from previous bone loss may be removed if necessary.

Graft Placement:

The placement of the bone graft is an essential step in the procedure. The type of material used for the graft will depend on your needs. It could be an allograft, xenograft, or an alloplastic graft. The graft is placed in the desired area. Dr. Michaelsen ensures the graft material is precisely and securely placed to encourage optimal integration with natural bone. The graft can be stabilized with small screws and membranes in some cases to keep it in place during the healing phase.

Healing Process:

The healing phase is crucial; the graft must integrate with your bone. You may experience minor swelling, discomfort, and bleeding in the first few days after the procedure. These symptoms may be managed with pain medication or anti-inflammatory drugs. You will be given detailed instructions on caring for the wound, such as avoiding certain activities during the healing phase or exercising dietary restrictions. Dr. Michaelsen schedules regular follow-up visits to monitor your progress. These appointments are necessary to monitor your progress and ensure the graft heals correctly. Over several months, your graft will gradually fuse to the existing bone. This creates a solid and stable foundation. This integration is crucial for future dental procedures, such as implant placement.

Following these steps carefully, Dr. Soren Michelsen’s expert care at Dental Arts can restore your bone structure and improve the overall health of your mouth. Please contact us if you need more information or have questions.
